Meyou vs Grindr in Southeast Asia (2026)

Written by the Meyou team. This is a comparison between our app and the biggest app in the category. We have an obvious interest in the outcome, so we've tried to be accurate rather than flattering — including about the places where Grindr is simply better for you than we are.

The one-line version

Grindr optimises for immediacy. Meyou optimises for conversations that survive. Those are different products, and which one is right depends entirely on what you're actually looking for tonight.

Where Grindr is better

Pool size. This isn't close. Grindr has been the category default for over a decade and in most SEA cities it has more people online right now than every alternative combined. If your priority is the largest possible number of nearby options, that's Grindr and it isn't a hard call.

Immediacy. Open the app, see who's nearby, message them. There is no onboarding to get through and no room to join first. For a lot of people and a lot of nights, that's exactly the right product.

Maturity. It's a well-built app with a decade of iteration behind it.

Where we think Meyou is better

Conversations that go somewhere. The complaint we hear constantly, and built around, is that matches die two messages in. It's not rudeness — it's that matching on a photo gives you nothing to say next. Starting from a shared interest means the conversation has a subject before it starts.

Fake accounts. Every Meyou account passes identity verification before it can participate. That's a real cost — we lose signups at that step, and we know it — but it removes most of the catfish and scam-account problem that makes the category exhausting.

Privacy defaults. Location is approximate and optional rather than precise by default. In parts of Southeast Asia that difference matters more than any feature.

The honest trade-off

Verification costs us users. Requiring people to prove who they are, in a region where a lot of people are not out, is a genuine barrier and we don't pretend otherwise. Some people will not do it, and for those people we are the wrong app.

We made that call because the alternative — an unverified pool where a meaningful share of profiles aren't real people — produces a worse experience for everyone who stays. But it's a trade-off, not a free win.

Which should you use

Most people we talk to use both, and that seems right to us. Grindr for reach. Meyou when you want a conversation to actually go somewhere.
